Peace of Mind Pet Guardianship Program

Each year, beloved dogs and cats are brought to shelters by family members or friends after an owner becomes seriously ill, moves into assisted living, or passes away without a plan in place for their pets. During an already emotional time, loved ones are left to make difficult decisions about where their companion will go. Too often, these animals end up in overcrowded shelters, facing uncertain outcomes.

To help prevent that situation, True Companions offers our “Peace of Mind” - Pet Guardianship Program. By enrolling your pet(s), you can feel confident knowing your companion will be cared for and protected, and you can spare your loved ones the stress and heartbreak of trying to re-home a pet on their own.

Program benefits include:

  • Encouraging you to write a detailed pet biography and care instructions that we will keep on file to help us place your pet in the best possible home.
  • Providing each enrolled family with a magnet that directs loved ones to contact True Companions in the event of an emergency.
  • Coordinating pickup of your pet by a True Companions volunteer or staff member, when needed.
  • Providing veterinary care while your pet is in our care, including vaccines, microchipping, and other medical services as appropriate.
  • Housing your pet in a safe setting such as our shelter, a foster home, or our cat retirement home until a loving forever home is found.

To enroll, we ask that you include a gift to True Companions in your will or estate plans. We recommend a gift of $5,000 or more to help offset the cost of your pet’s care and support the long-term sustainability of the program. Regardless of gift amount, we will do our best to ensure your beloved companion receives excellent care and the opportunity for a new home.
