Become a Foster Volunteer with True Companions Animal Shelter & Clinic

Foster volunteers play a vital role in True Companions Animal Shelter & Clinic's mission to give every animal a second chance. By opening your home, you provide temporary care and comfort to animals who need more than the shelter can offer. Fostering not only helps pets heal and thrive—it also prepares them for a successful adoption.

Foster volunteers are essential to True Companions mission by providing safe, supportive homes for animals in need. True Companions relies on foster volunteers to help care for:

  • Pets facing medical or behavioral challenges
  • Pregnant or nursing cats and dogs
  • Bottle-fed kittens and puppies
  • Animals requiring hospice care

All foster volunteers must complete a foster application and participate in a home inspection as part of the approval process.

Our foster program supports a wide range of animals, including:

  • Pets recovering from medical treatment or surgery
  • Hospice animals needing end-of-life comfort care
  • Dogs and cats with specific behavioral needs
  • Pregnant or nursing moms and their litters
  • Kittens and puppies requiring bottle feeding
  • Long-term shelter residents who would benefit from a home environment
  1. Complete a Foster Application: Submit your application and inquiries to fostering@truecompanions.org
  2. Meet-and-Greet Requirement: Because True Companions accepts all animals, everyone in your household must meet the foster animal in person before approval. This ensures a safe and happy match.
  3. Location & Home Check: Foster volunteers must live within 30 minutes of True Companions and complete an annual home inspection.
As a foster volunteer, you agree to;
  • Provide high-quality pet food, litter boxes (for cats), toys, and a safe home environment
  • Transport animals to and from True Companions for veterinary or other appointments
  • Commit to care until a permanent adoptive home is found
  • Share updates and provide access for prospective adopters
  • Stay in regular communication with your foster coordinator
To support you in this lifesaving role, we provide:
  • A dedicated foster coordinator for behavior or health concerns
  • Veterinary care through True Companions (including vaccines, medications, prescription diets if needed)
  • Emergency veterinary care with coordinator approval;
  • Supplies such as beds, blankets, and kennels (subject to availability)
  • Behavioral training support from our in-house team
Fostering truly saves lives. It reduces stress for animals, opens up space at the shelter for others in need, and helps pets adjust to a home environment. For many volunteers, fostering is one of the most rewarding experiences they’ve ever had.
