To shelter, care for and find homes for pets in our community, and welcome into our care even those pets with the most critical need. We do this while working to forward the No Kill movement through community, advocacy, and by maximizing programs that strengthen this mission.
In 1997, veterinarian Dr. William Suro and his wife Nanci Suro raised funds for an unknown dog who entered Dr. Suro’s clinic after being hit by a car. Naming the dog Max, they placed a jar on the reception desk that said, “The Max Fund.”
By 1988 a nonprofit was established committed to the No Kill animal welfare philosophy, serving dogs and cats in its shelter operations, and providing gold-standard veterinary care for both shelter animals and owned, community pets.
As the nonprofit organization has grown, it has acquired additional land and buildings to create a vibrant, thriving Campus comprised of 6 buildings located in the Santa Fe Arts District, along W 10th Avenue between Inca Street and Galapago St.
Through a cohesive Master Plan, the MaxFund Campus has been developed and improved for over 30 years to a 56,000 sf site and 6 buildings with over 30,000 sf of state-of-the-art facilities.
In 2026, MaxFund, Inc. became True Companions, Inc., moving the organization forward while continuing its No Kill mission – serving the animals in our care and supporting the animal welfare needs of the community through comprehensive shelter support programs and advanced services in veterinary care.
